Bum-mer Time Sadness: The Effects of Heat on Your Bowels

There’s a thin line between love and hate when it comes to summer. On one side, summer means less responsibility, less clothes and a lot more fun. On the other side, summer also means awful body odor, overworked sweat glands (since when do eyelashes sweat?) and the looming threat of a heat stroke. It’s so hard to decide whether or not we should break up with summer at the end of summer. Unfortunately, the season isn’t making a great case for itself on the health front. In 2013, Swiss researchers observed a rise in both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and infectious gastroenteritis (IG) incidences during heat waves.

Inflammatory bowel diseases affect more than 1.6 million Americans. That’s one in every 200 Americans living with one of these debilitating, medically incurable diseases. "There has never before been a study investigating the impact of climate change, represented by an increase in heat waves, on IBD and IG flares," stated Dr. Christine Manser, a gastroenterologist at University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. Her research suggests that heat waves could be affecting the growth of bacteria, stressing the body out and triggering a flare-up of digestive symptoms.

The heat doesn’t only affect those with IBD. When it’s blazing outside, the body sends extra blood to the vital organs to keep them functioning, including the skin. This means less blood to your tumtum. Digestion plays second fiddle to the rest of our body, so blood vessels to our gastrointestinal system restrict. So if your wondering why you never want to eat when your hot, this is the reason. To avoid the heat induced nausea, eat foods that are easy to digest, like simple carbohydrates, and avoid foods high in protein or fat and naturally, drink lots of water.
