TUSHY’s Carbon Offset Initiative

Saving the planet, one butt at a time

TUSHY is proud to announce our carbon offset initiative in fartnership with Cool Effect, a nonprofit helping us reduce and offset our carbon emissions. We are putting our money where our butt is and have chosen to support three projects listed on Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). Each of these projects has also been awarded multiple United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.

A Better Use For Poop

Turning swine waste into useful compost

This project reduces 12,600 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents each year or 126,000 metric tonnes over the 10-year life of the project by recycling swine waste and converting it into compost. In doing so, the project protects the local water supply and the environment from potential contamination from waste run-off. It also creates a system to provide local communities with low-cost and low-carbon footprint compost that can be used as fertilizer in local farms.

Alto Mayo Protected Forest

Tropical forests are the Earth’s lungs

Alto Mayo Protected Forest

Tropical forests are the Earth’s lungs

This project protects nearly 450,000 acres from deforestation. Since trees sequester carbon pollution, more trees = less CO₂. The Alto Mayo forest is twice the size of New York City, but it’s under threat from deforestation despite its protected status. This project provides technical assistance and advice on the ground to transform illegal loggers into organic coffee farmers and eco-entrepreneurs. Local people earn more while taking pride in protecting the forest and its endangered plants and animals and the planet benefits. Bottom Line: Tropical forests are the Earth’s lungs—absorbing carbon pollution and releasing oxygen. By providing new and environmentally friendly ways for Peruvians to use the forest, this project helps save the CO₂-absorbing rainforest from deforestation.

Brazilian Amazon Rosewood Conservation Projec

Preventing deforestation and giving degraded forests an opportunity to regenerate

Brazilian Amazon Rosewood Conservation Project

Preventing deforestation and giving degraded forests an opportunity to regenerate

This project has been implemented to prevent unplanned deforestation in native forests by monitoring and conserving nearly 180,000 hectares in 17 privately owned parcels or “Glebas” in the Portel, a micro-region of Brazil. It intends to prevent emissions of 550,000 tonnes every year and 22 million tonnes of CO₂ over a 40-year period through improved forest management.

It is managed in the form of a “private conservation reserve” through the development and deployment of a management plan. The plan includes comprehensive monitoring and enforcement built on the existing experience of ongoing surveillance activities in the area, which began in 2008. The medium-term goal is to allow maximum forest regeneration in order to increase the amount of carbon sequestered in the forest.
